Job Description: Sales and Product Manager - Root Down Farm

Root Down Farm is a queer-owned regenerative poultry & pig operation located in beautiful Pescadero, California. We humanely raise chickens, turkeys, ducks and pigs through rotational grazing & foraging, while improving our soils and increasing biodiversity. We see ourselves as stewards of the land and use the natural behaviors of our animals to improve soil health while producing honest and delicious meat.
We are diving into our 13th year and are looking for a part-time to eventual full-time Sales and Product Manager to join our small but mighty team. This is a newer position for Root Down and we are excited to find someone who wants to grow with our operation and this position.
Many aspects of this position can be done remotely with a minimum one day per week at the farm (Tuesdays). The absolute ideal candidate will have sales, marketing & customer relations experience, interest in livestock and an expanding meat operation, and be excited to grow this job into a long term position. The ideal candidate will also be proficient on basic computer tasks (email, google docs, spreadsheets, squarespace, square POS), be highly organized, reliable, creative, able to work solo and collaboratively, and communicate directly and clearly.
Job Summary: Manage all details of each sales channel including farmers markets, CSA, wholesale accounts and annual Fall Farm Fest, and develop new channels as needed. Establish and maintain communication with all wholesale customers, manage all product inventory, organization and orders. Manage all customer communications, on-farm orders and logistics.
Responsibilities:
Support two weekend Farmers Markets in San Francisco
Including but not limited to:
Weekly communication with market staff on all product updates/changes/ items coming or leaving and check in often to see if they need any replacements or anything at all
Clean up from markets, charge iPads/scales
Clean and prep totes each week, replace items as needed, update signs as needed
Put fresh items into freezer, freezer items put away on Mondays
Complete pack lists for each market weekly
Make sure all product is accessible and organized for market packer
Check and update all market signage
Stay in touch with market managers as needed/ respond to various market requests
Make sure market van is running properly and clean inside and out
Manage market packer, and communicate with them and market staff to ensure everything is getting packed correctly, make adjustments as needed
Manage all market materials, clean/update/replace as needed
Keep fridge/freezer organized and clean so all is ready and stocked for Friday/Saturday market packing
Always looking how to improve market stall/ display/ signage/ farm info (card or sign or..)
Fill-in for market workers on vacation or when sick (share this with owner)
Oversee that coolers and crates are clean inside and out for each market
Manage Wholesale Program
Including but not limited to:
Mondays- Contact wholesale customers and receive all weekly orders
Compile orders to send processor weekly cut instructions
Tuesdays pack orders on farm then drive van to SC to build pallets for weekly Wednesday Bay Area wholesale route, then return with fresh chickens and unload into walk-in fridge
Communicate with wholesale customers, follow up with interested folks, stay in touch with existing accounts
Communicate with farmer on chicken needs for the week so farm staff understand what chickens to pack Monday evening
Work on selling overstocked products that need to be moved by researching new accounts or communicating with existing accounts; keep product moving
Pack orders for local wholesale accounts, manage deliveries
Manage seasonal meat CSA, through neighbor Fifth Crow Farm (every other week, May - Nov)
Create/ adjust each CSA box contents and price (usually in Feb)
Communicate with CSA manager weekly for content or number adjustments
Plan product highlights throughout season
Pick up labels from 5th Crow Wednesday morning
Pack CSA bags and pack bags in coolers
Coolers to 5th Crow Thursday morning
Wash coolers in preparation for CSA
Create marketing materials to include in CSA coolers or bags
Communicate with CSA manager on how to improve CSA sales before, during and after season
Other responsibilities:
Respond to customer emails/phone calls/texts in a timely manner
Update website (products, where to find our products, general eyes on the whole site, update photos as needed, communicate with web designer for format updates)
Restock on-site farmstand, and keep clean and organized
Various driving routes for meat pick ups or deliveries as needed (not always weekly)
Communicate with ‘on farm’ pick up customers, pack orders accordingly
Inventory and purchase barn cleaning supplies, soap, additional product and market supplies
Help plan, organize and run annual Fall Farm Fest in November
Compensation: $25/hr to start. Employment review after 3 months of training/onboarding for feedback and possible raise.
One week paid vacation after 6 months of employment, 2 weeks after one year.
